Story Behind

Astha Tamang Maskey

Born in Kathmandu, Nepal, Astha Tamang-Maskey stands out as a multifaceted artist with a captivating voice and a unique sound that blends her acoustic guitar prowess with innovative beats. Known for her melodic, direct, and emotionally charged music, Astha explores deep themes of the human experience through her songs. Her sound is a rich tapestry of pop, folk, and R&B influences, reflecting a diverse musical background and an evolving artistic vision.

Astha's musical journey began early in life. After completing her primary education in Kathmandu, she moved to Canada at the age of 12. Raised in a family deeply immersed in music, Astha started playing the acoustic guitar at 13. By 14, she was already writing and performing her original compositions at high school talent shows. Her passion for music led her to record her first studio demo by 15. Following her high school graduation, Astha pursued formal education in music and audio production. She enrolled in the Independent Music Production Program at Seneca College, graduating in 2008 with a nomination for the Ontario Premier's Award. Her pursuit of excellence in audio engineering continued at the Harris Institute for the Arts, where she graduated from the Audio Production Program in 2010 and received the Canadian Music Publisher's Award in 2011. Further expanding her skills, she earned a diploma in Business Administration from Sheridan College in 2014, receiving the Nelson Education Award for academic excellence. Recently, Astha completed an honours degree in Business Technology Management from Toronto Metropolitan University, where she was honored on the Dean’s Honour List.

Astha’s career as a singer-songwriter and sound engineer has been marked by continuous growth and exploration. At 19, she returned to Kathmandu to reconnect with her roots and released her debut Nepali album, Sabai Thikai Huncha, on January 21, 2009. The album's success, particularly with the hit single “Gotta Be Love,” which topped Nepalese FM charts, established her as a prominent artist in Nepal. Her second single, “Jhuto Satya,” earned a nomination for “Best Rock Vocal Performance” at the Image Awards, while she received the “Best Pop Female Vocalist” award at Radio Kantipur’s Music Honours 2010. The album's impact was amplified by her co-founding Fuzz Productions, a company that became a cornerstone of the independent DIY music movement.

Astha’s musical evolution continued with the release of her English EP 11:11 in 2011 and her second Nepali album Ma Ek Sapana in 2012. The latter's singles, including “Khula Aakash” and “Harek Saas Sita,” received significant airplay and accolades, further cementing her position in the Nepali music scene. Her 2014 single “Gham Ko Saano Tukra” was a charitable endeavor supporting CWIN, reflecting her commitment to social causes. Astha's English single “Where Have You Been,” a collaboration with The Author, achieved international recognition by winning the People’s Voice Award at the International Songwriting Competition and receiving widespread airplay.

In 2018, Astha released the single “Muse,” which was featured on Spotify's curated playlist Just Vibing and showcased her versatility across genres. The full album, released on January 25, 2020, was produced by Toronto-based Losh and Captain Cl!ck, highlighting her bilingual capabilities and genre-blending style. Her recent Nepali single “Chodera Najau” earned top chart positions and multiple nominations at the Hits FM Music Awards, winning the “Best Female Pop Vocal Performance Award.”

Astha's latest project, her upcoming album Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, reflects a return to her acoustic roots with authentic songwriting and collaboration with producers Niraj Tamang and Binaya Man Amatya. Alongside her solo work, Astha collaborates with her mother, Susan Maskey, under the moniker Aama Chhori, producing acoustic renditions and patriotic tributes that have resonated deeply with audiences, including their popular rendition of “Baneko Chha” which has garnered over a million streams on YouTube.

Astha Tamang-Maskey’s journey from a young talent in Kathmandu to an accomplished international artist illustrates her dedication, versatility, and the profound impact she continues to make in the music industry.
