Story Behind
Natikaji Shrestha, also known as Amritlal Shrestha, was born in 1952 in Pilchowk, Lalitpur, Nepal, to Mohan Lal Shrestha and Champa Devi Shrestha. Unfortunately, he faced the loss of his mother at the age of 5 and his father at the age of 10. Subsequently, he was raised by his grandparents in Gujeshwori, where his grandfather served as the temple priest.
Given the name "Nati" (grandson) "Kaji" (aristocrat) by his maternal grandparents, he initiated his musical journey at the tender age of 7 by learning to play the harmonium at the Gujeshwori Bhajan Mandali. Tuyu Narayan Shrestha was his initial music guru. He actively participated in bhajan sessions at the temple, singing devotional songs and performing in various musical plays.
At 25, Nati Kaji joined Radio Nepal as a singer and musician, where he worked from 1951 to 1978, holding the position of Nayab Subba. His musical career took off with "Hosh narakhi hidhda yatri," establishing him as a pioneer of modern Nepali music. Renowned as a singer, lyricist, and musician, he served Radio Nepal for 40 years and composed over 2000 songs across various genres, including patriotic songs, love songs, and bhajans.
Nati Kaji married Saraswati Raj Bhandari, and the couple had three daughters: Sanjeeta, Kabita, and Sabita. His contribution to Nepali music includes over 300 modern songs, 171 bhajans, 81 national songs, and 10 children's songs. Nati Kaji's legacy lives on as the "Melody King of Nepal," with timeless compositions like "Marna baru gahro hunna," "Aja ra rati," "Phulko thunga bagera gayo," and "Yasto pani hundo raichha."
He has been credited for immortal numbers such as 'yo Nepali shir uchali,' 'sapana bhulai saara,' and 'timilai hasera bida matra diyisakethen.' Nati Kaji received honors such as Gorkha Dakshin Bahu Pratham, Indra Rajya Laxmi Pragya Puraskar, Chinnalata Geet Puraskar, Bhupal Sangeet Puraskar, and others.
In his efforts to expand Nepal's music horizons, he faced health challenges, including heart problems and a diagnosis of Parkinson's disease. Nati Kaji passed away at the age of 75 at Medicare Hospital, Chabahil. His contributions to Nepali music continue to resonate in the hearts of the people.
