The Night Band

Night is an independent new-school folk band based in Kathmandu, Nepal. Formed in early 2006, the band emerged from a deep passion for musical exploration both cultural and sonic. Drawing inspiration from global sounds and the rich musical traditions of Nepal, Night seamlessly blends endangered indigenous instruments with contemporary Western ones, creating a soundscape that is both rooted and refreshingly modern.

Their music is an organic fusion of traditional and contemporary influences an honest reflection of their reverence for Nepal's heritage and their drive to explore new musical terrain. This spirit of exploration is evident in their debut album, "Ani Ukali Sangai Orali", which was born out of their travels to remote regions of Nepal. The album's title, meaning "Together Uphill and Downhill," echoes the daily struggles and rhythms of rural life in the hills, inspired by the people they met and the stories they encountered along the way.

Through intimate melodies and thoughtful lyrics, the album captures the essence of Nepal's landscapes and the resilience of its people. Themes of hardship, simplicity, and cultural pride run deep in their compositions, resonating with listeners both at home and abroad.

Night recently released their debut music video, "Kathor", a track from their upcoming album, which has received widespread acclaim for its raw emotion and authenticity.

Beyond performing, Night is actively engaged in cultural preservation. They are involved in reviving the endangered Mahaali, a sacred traditional wind instrument played by the Jugi (tailor) caste of the Newar community in Bhaktapur. The band has initiated training programs to teach the Mahaali to a new generation, supported by funds raised through their performances.

Night is also composing music for the anticipated Nepali feature film "Chhadke", further extending their creative reach into cinematic storytelling.

With every note, Night continues its journey uphill and downhill celebrating the forgotten, the fragile, and the fiercely beautiful sounds of Nepal.
